Another change is coming to the Orioles’ front office. Longtime assistant general manager Sig Mejdal’s role is changing away from oversight of the analytics department, two sources confirmed, as The Athletic first reported.

Mejdal, one of president of baseball operations Mike Elias’ trusted lieutenants, will now oversee emerging technologies and innovative practices in Baltimore’s front office.

Earlier this month, Matt Blood, the vice president of player and staff development and a longtime member of the Orioles’ front office, left the organization.

Mejdal, who worked for NASA as a biomathematician prior to breaking into baseball, got his start in the sport by working with the St. Louis Cardinals’ fledgling analytics department in 2005. He then joined the Houston Astros before following Elias from Houston to Baltimore when Elias was hired to begin a rebuilding process in 2018.

Shortly after arriving, Elias and Mejdal modernized the Orioles’ approach by injecting more manpower into data analytics. Baltimore overhauled the department, with Di Zou the lone holdover (Zou remains as the senior director of baseball systems and analytics operations).

By the time spring training arrived in 2019, Mejdal’s department went from a three-person group to nearly a dozen, according to MLB.com.

When Elias hired Mejdal in 2018, Elias called it a “major moment for this franchise.”

“I look forward to him charting the course for all of our forthcoming efforts in the analytics space,” Elias said in a release.

The Orioles’ rise into a contender didn’t materialize into a postseason win in 2023 and 2024, and Baltimore is at risk of falling to a sub-.500 record for the second straight year. There are nine games remaining, and the Orioles still have a slim chance at the playoffs despite a 75-78 record.
