ASHBURN, Va. — Dan Quinn has been asked just about every variation of the question at this point.

Will quarterback Jayden Daniels actually play in the preseason?

After an injury-riddled 2025, which saw him miss over half the season, Daniels has played live football just twice since last October. Quinn understands the argument for him to play.

But Washington’s head coach doesn’t think it is a necessity for his quarterback to see any live snaps before the season opener against the Eagles on Sept. 13.

“I’d be comfortable with him, and other veterans who have played, to not go,” Quinn said.

Quinn remains undecided on whether Daniels will play on Saturday in Detroit. In reality, it will be the last chance for Daniels to play at all. Typically starters sit out the final preseason game, taking him out for Baltimore.

But Quinn said he’s seen enough in practice to feel good about Daniels sitting out.

“He’s thrown an incredible training camp,” he said. “His accuracy, his command of it. A new system, you wouldn’t feel like that for him. But I’ve certainly been impressed by what I’ve seen so far by him.”

Final determinations on personnel in Detroit will happen after Thursday’s practice. Quinn is using this week as the most taxing of camp, with several padded practices and a game. That could factor into whether Daniels goes under center this weekend.

“We haven’t decided in terms of will we, or won’t we,” Quinn said. “We had a joint [practice] last week. You got a lot of reps. He’ll get a lot today and tomorrow going against our defense, so I’ll have a better sense for where everybody is before we make any of those decisions.”

Injury report

Washington already saw the perils of playing in the preseason during its opener against Miami.

Defensive lineman Jer’Zhan Newton suffered a pectoral injury in the game Friday, potentially taking him out for an extended period. Newton is in New York seeing a specialist to determine next steps.

It is a significant injury for a former high draft pick trying to make the team. Newton was the odds-on favorite to take a spot on the interior defensive line. But undrafted lineman Ricky Barber made a strong case against Miami to unseat him.

Washington is dealing with a few other minor injuries. Outside linebacker Odafe Oweh, who signed a four-year, $100 million deal in the offseason, is dealing with a strained calf. Outside linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson is dealing with a knee injury that Quinn said wasn’t “significant.” Linebacker Jordan Magee has a shoulder injury that could keep him out a week.
