U.S. Sen. Angela Alsobrooks announced her endorsement of Montgomery County Council member Will Jawando for county executive on Friday afternoon, giving him one of the most high-profile endorsements in the race to date.
“Will is someone who knows how to fight, win, and deliver for working families,” Alsobrooks, a Democrat, said in a news release Friday. “He will protect Montgomery County from the current Administration’s disastrous policies, fight on behalf of Marylanders in Montgomery County, and get things done for us.”
Jawando is running against his fellow council members Andrew Friedson and Evan Glass, and two other Democrats, Mithun Banerjee and Peter James, in the June 23 primary.
Jawando thanked Alsobrooks for her endorsement in the news release.
“Senator Alsobrooks has been a tireless champion for Maryland families, and she understands what is at stake in this race,” he said.
U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen has not weighed in on the race.
Among the state’s eight members of the House of Representatives, U.S. Rep. Sarah Elfreth (D-Dist. 3) has endorsed Friedson and U.S. Rep. Kweisi Mfume (D-Dist. 7) has endorsed Jawando. Former Rep. David Trone has endorsed Glass.
Gov. Wes Moore issued endorsements in Howard County’s and Baltimore County’s executive races Thursday but not in Montgomery or Anne Arundel County.
