Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Baltimore was on lockdown for over an hour on Wednesday after a report of a gun inside the building, according to officials.

The lockdown ended at 1 p.m. Students streamed out of the high school, walking along Orleans Street for lunch after being held in classrooms and the cafeteria, and a group of kids played soccer.

Baltimore City School Police conducted a thorough search in the building, said school district spokesperson Sherry Christian. No students were in danger, she said, and no weapon was found. Baltimore Police and the Baltimore City Sheriff’s Office assisted in the search.

Around 11:30 a.m., a student reported to school staff another kid had brought a gun into the building, Christian said. She said “strong bonds” and trust between students and staff are important for the district to know potential threats.

The school went back to normal operations after the lockdown was lifted, but after-school activities, including a basketball game, were canceled. Counseling will be provided to any student who needs it, Christian said.

More than a dozen police vehicles were parked outside the school on Orleans Street in the Dunbar-Broadway neighborhood.
