A new play at Bethesda’s Round House Theatre asks its audience to reexamine the way America tells stories about its past.
“Sally and Tom” is a humorous and thoughtful story about a theater group putting on a play about Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson. Timelines switch back and forth between the real-life Hemings and Jefferson in the late 1700s and the present-day play company helmed by a playwright and her partner, the director.
The past and present intersect as the same actors portray the two couples, hundreds of years apart, and prompt questions about the way America chooses to remember its past.
As the country approaches its 250th anniversary, the Round House team was conscious that not all celebrations tell nuanced stories about U.S. history.
“We have way more to gain from actually looking at it truthfully,” said Ryan Rilette, artistic director of Round House Theatre.

The play is Round House’s third production of a play by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks.
“She has a great way of looking at our history and making parallels to the present moment,” Rilette added.
Performances of “Sally and Tom” run from Wednesday through June 28. Tickets range from $50 to $94.
