Three WMATA Red Line stops are closing for the summer, starting on Monday. They’re not expected to reopen until Sept. 6. But temporary bus lanes are coming to Rockville Pike to help speed riders to areas served by the closed stations β€” Bethesda, Medical Center and Grosvenor-Strathmore.

The State Highway Administration is installing 7.5 miles of bus lanes on portions of Rockville Pike between the Friendship Heights and North Bethesda stations. The lanes go into effect Monday.

Cars will not be able to use the bus lanes from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., except on Sundays. Parking in the bus lanes will also be prohibited.

Metro is closing part of the Red Line this summer to complete construction projects at some stops, including creating a second mezzanine at its Bethesda station for the Purple Line, a light rail line that will travel between Bethesda and New Carrollton.

Metro will be operating free shuttle buses every five to eight minutes with service to stops at North Bethesda, Grosvenor-Strathmore, Medical Center, Bethesda and Friendship Heights. The travel time between stops will be about 10 minutes.

Express shuttle buses, also operating every five to eight minutes, will offer nonstop service between North Bethesda and Friendship Heights. The trip down Rockville Pike will take about 26 minutes, Metro officials said. Travelers can visit the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s website to see the exact locations of the shuttle bus stops.

The northern segment of the bus lane, stretching from the Beltway to Marinelli Road, will be evaluated to see if it should be made permanent, according to a county news release.
