A Washington resident who visited Maryland tested positive for measles, state health officials said, amplifying calls for testing and vaccinations after a recent uptick in cases.

Maryland Department of Health officials urge anyone who visited New Hampshire Business Center in Hyattsville between noon and 6:30 p.m. April 24 to monitor for symptoms, which include a cough, fever, head-to-toe rash and runny nose.

Last Friday, the state confirmed two cases of measles from people in the Baltimore area nearly a week after confirming the first case this year in someone in Baltimore County.

Health officials warn measles is a highly contagious disease that easily spreads when an infected person coughs, sneezes or breathes in a space. It lingers for 2-4 hours after an infected person leaves an area, officials said.

The first case in Maryland had public health experts on edge. Though Maryland has a high vaccination rate, there are pockets of unvaccinated people that worry some.

Before April 21, Maryland had recorded only five measles cases in the last five years. Now there have been three residents in the state and a visitor from neighboring Washington with measles.

Maryland state health officials suggest people make sure their measles, mumps and rubella vaccination status is up to date.

Here are other places the infected person traveled, per the D.C. Health Department.
