The Patterson Park Pool was closed on a scorching Saturday afternoon due to vandalism overnight, city officials said.
Baltimore City Recreation and Parks officials said on Saturday afternoon that the vandals caused damage to the facility’s pool deck and pool. Officials said they were “working as quickly as possible” to make repairs so the pool could reopen.
Those repairs included an “8 to 12-hour filtration process to restore the pool system”, said Alex Silverman, a spokesperson for Recreation and Parks, in an email.
“Pool hopping is often accompanied by vandalism, a problem experienced by Baltimore and other cities nationwide,“ said Silverman. ”This is the second instance of vandalism at Patterson Park pool this week.”
Silverman said the pool was expected to open for regular hours on Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
City pools, including Patterson Park, started opening for the summer season May 23. All neighborhood and park pools will open by June 16. The city will use many pools to help residents cool off during extreme heat.
Although this weekend is not expected to reach a level of extreme heat, temperatures are expected to hit the mid-90s, with a chance of storms in the evening Saturday.
Recreation and Parks asked the community to call 911 if they see suspicious activity at pools after hours this summer.
