The parents of a 2-month-old Baltimore girl who died Wednesday after suffering trauma to her body are now charged with child abuse in connection with her death, police said.

Katerin Monzon-Alvarado and Oscar Pineda, both 21, were charged with abusing and endangering their daughter, Aida Alvarado, according to a Baltimore Police Department news release.

Officers and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner responded to MedStar Harbor Hospital shortly after 1 a.m. that morning to a report of an infant’s death, police said.

The medical examiner’s office found that the baby had suffered trauma to the body, according to the news release.

Detectives took the parents into custody soon after and interviewed them. They were later charged with first- and second-degree child abuse, first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment. The police said there may be additional homicide charges, but that will depend on the outcome of the autopsy.

The parents are being held at Central Booking. It was not immediately clear if either parent had obtained a lawyer.
