Missing man found dead in Potomac River after dayslong search

Another person’s body has been recovered from the Potomac River days after search crews scattered through the area looking for him, Montgomery County Fire officials said.

Water rescue workers found the man’s body around 11:30 a.m. Thursday below the surface, David Pazos, a spokesperson for the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Department, said on social media. The man, who has not been identified, went missing in the Potomac around Spotzbergen Rock, south of Sandy Landing, on Monday, officials said.

Crews used sonar and below-surface camera imagery to locate the man, officials said. He was transported to the state medical examiner’s office, Montgomery County Fire officials said. Pazos said the man’s family has been notified.

This is the third person who has died in the Potomac this summer. In June, Nazir Bell, a 20-year-old Towson University student, was found dead in the water after going missing while swimming, sparking a daylong, multi-agency search.

Earlier this month, the body of a 16-year-old boy was found a day after going missing in the Potomac near Great Falls Park.
