Aviation and diving resources have been deployed as authorities search for an 18-year-old boater who went missing in the Susquehanna River near Garrett Island Wednesday evening, state officials said.

Mark Everett Coates III of Havre de Grace was last seen wearing a chartreuse long-sleeved T-shirt and blue jeans before launching his boat from the Water Street Boat Ramp in his hometown, the National Resources Police said in a news release.

Coates’ last known location put him around the Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge, which carries US 40 traffic, around 5 p.m. Wednesday. Thursday morning, officials were called to Garrett Island in Cecil County for a capsized boat.

It was the same 10-foot aluminum job boat that Coates was known to be operating, NRP said. The boat was about half a mile upstream from where Coates launched it, said Hunter Dortenzo, a spokesperson for the Natural Resources Police, said in an email.

Coates had gone fishing, Dortenzo said, and he was the sole occupant of the vessel.

Local agencies, including Harford County Emergency Services, the Harford County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard, are searching for Coates using aviation and diving resources, officials said.

NRP is asking boaters to avoid the Susquehanna River between the US 40 and Interstate 95 bridges. The Susquehanna River flows 444 miles from Otsego Lake in Cooperstown, New York, to Havre de Grace, where it meets the Chesapeake Bay.
