Matt Button, a spokesperson for the county’s emergency management division, said in an email that it received roughly 17 calls from residents about a loud bang or explosion accompanied by shaking in their homes. More than 300 people shared with USGS that they felt the quake, the federal agency said.

Earthquakes aren’t common in the mid-Atlantic region, but they do happen occasionally. Residents in the Columbia and Savage areas were hit by a 2.5 magnitude quake last year. It was reported to have lasted about 20 seconds.

One of the most widely felt quakes in the region took place in 2011, when a magnitude 5.8 earthquake was detected near Mineral, Virginia. It shook the Washington Monument, severely damaged the National Cathedral and caused millions in overall property damage.

This is a developing story.
