A 72-year-old Baltimore woman with dementia who had been missing from the Charles Village area since June 17 was found dead on Monday, officials said.
The remains of Darlene Campbell, known affectionately by many in her neighborhood as Ms. Darlene, were found in a building in the 1900 block of Greenmount Avenue, Lindsey Eldridge, a spokesperson for the Baltimore Police Department, said in a news release. She had last been seen on city surveillance cameras near Barclay and East 25th streets walking east toward Greenmount Avenue.
Campbellβs remains were taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause and manner of her death, police said.
Police posted video footage of Campbell walking away from her home, a surprise for many considering the woman had not gone out for walks for over a year due to pain in her legs and struggles with keeping her balance, her daughter, Lisa Campbell, told The Banner.
Lisa Campbell, along with other relatives and community members, led search efforts for her mother over the weekend, combing alleys, roadways and vacant parcels for her. Before Monday, the family said they had received no tips about Darlene Campbellβs whereabouts.
Loved ones described Darlene Campbell as a friendly, loving and supportive caretaker who was known for cooking big meals to feed her family and neighbors
βShe would go the extra mile for you,β Lisa Campbell said. βEverybody tends to always lean on her because she was the person that kept our family together.β
