The Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter is getting some relief after a surge in needy animals plunged the center into a “crisis.”

The facility said in a Friday Facebook post it had run out of space after more than 100 animals were dropped off in 48 hours. About 60 animals arrived Thursday night, the post said.

“Our kennels are full. Our intake temp kennels are full. Our offices are full. There is no more place to put our dogs. We are in crisis,” BARCS said over social media.

By late Saturday, though, things were looking up.

The facility hosted a Saturday afternoon adoption event in Timonium, looking to create more room in its kennels. In a social media post that night, the group said the event saved 78 animals’ lives.

In total, 60 animals left the shelter Saturday due to a mix of off-site adoptions, foster placements, rescue transfers, adoptions and redemptions. Another 18 animals were on adoption-pending holds, according to the post.

The shelter said adoption fees would be waived through Sunday to bolster adoptions, as the center remained understaffed with a large number of animals still looking for homes.

It described the day over social media as “full, busy and emotional.”

“Baltimore showed up for these animals today. And it mattered. Thank you,” BARCS said.
