A pit bull was shot by Baltimore Police and euthanized after biting its owner and charging at an officer, officials said.
Four officers responded to the 6500 block of Hartwait Street just before 3 p.m. Thursday for a dog attack, police said. When police arrived at the home in the Broening Manor neighborhood, officials said, officers found the pit bull’s owner with an injured right hand.
According to police officials, the dog, which was unrestrained, charged at one of the officers, and two others responded with gunfire. Officials said police struck the pit bull in its neck and an officer was hit in the foot by a bullet that ricocheted.
The dog’s owner and the wounded officer were hospitalized but have been released. The dog was taken by Animal Control, which also responded to the scene, and later euthanized.
Last October, Baltimore Police fatally shot a dog in an apartment in the 900 block of St. Paul Street after it became aggressive toward its owner and bit him. In bodycam footage released this year, a man is heard trying to calm his dog, Roscoe, in his apartment.
The 33-year-old man made his way out of the apartment and into the hallway while the growling dog gnawed into one of his hands. Two police officers opened fire, killing the dog and wounding the man.
