A 16-year-old who was struck by a car while riding his bike along West Joppa Road last week has died, Baltimore County Police said.

Alexander Norenberg, a junior at Towson High School, died Thursday from injuries he suffered when a vehicle struck him on the evening of May 5, officials said. Norenberg was cycling eastbound on West Joppa Road when a 2019 BMW traveling westbound hit him as he tried to turn onto Abell Ridge Circle, said Trae Corbin, a spokesperson for the Baltimore County Police Department, in an email.

The teen was transported to a hospital following the crash. Corbin said an investigation is open and no charges have been filed against the BMW driver.

In a letter to parents and guardians, Towson High School Principal Kimberly Culbertson said counselors were working with students individually and in small groups following Norenberg’s death. The Baltimore County Public Schools Traumatic Response Team would also be available to students, she said.

Culbertson remembered what Norenberg meant to the Towson High School community and extended sympathy to his family.

“Alex was a member of the junior class and was known by his peers and staff for his kindness, curiosity, and incredible work ethic,” Culbertson said.

Earlier this year, Norenberg became one of 40 students selected from 80 applicants for an Albrecht Fellowship for High School Students at the World Trade Center Institute. High school sophomores, juniors and seniors in the Albrecht Fellowship meet over the course of eight Saturdays to tackle local and global challenges, develop their leadership skills, serve their communities and learn from business leaders across the Baltimore region.

Norenberg was a member of the school’s band, speech and debate team, and Diversity and STEM club, as well as the National English Honor Society, according to his LinkedIn profile.

The World Trade Center Institute did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Culbertson shared that the school did not have information about a funeral service yet.
