A former Spanish teacher at Woodlawn Middle School admitted Monday to sexually abusing and exploiting a student who was between 14 and 16 at the time.

Sydnie Haywood, 34, of Pikesville, pleaded guilty in Baltimore County Circuit Court to nine counts of fourth-degree sex offense.

Prosecutors are not asking for additional jail time. Instead, they are recommending that Circuit Judge Dennis Robinson Jr. sentence Haywood to five years’ supervised probation and order her to register as a sex offender for 15 years.

Outside the courtroom, Haywood’s attorney, Warren Brown, described the case as “quite nuanced” but added that this does not relieve his client of responsibility.

During the 2019-20 school year, Haywood asked the student if she could follow her on Instagram, Assistant State’s Attorney Kayla York said.

Later, Haywood sent the student private messages. They started spending time together outside of school, and there was “some form of sexual interaction” 90% of the time, York said.

At one point, Haywood’s husband became suspicious and followed the two to an Airbnb and later contacted police, York said. Baltimore County Public Schools also conducted an internal investigation and determined that Haywood was “no longer eligible for employment.”

The sexual abuse took place in both Baltimore and Baltimore County, according to authorities.

Earlier this year, Haywood pleaded guilty in Baltimore Circuit Court to one count of fourth-degree sex offense in a related case and was sentenced to no additional time in jail. She was incarcerated for more than nine months.

Haywood remains free on home detention while she awaits sentencing on Sept. 18.
