Woman hospitalized, suspect dead following an early morning shooting in Temple Hills

A woman is in stable condition at a local hospital after she was shot by her boyfriend Tuesday morning, according to police. Authorities said the man later died of a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Prince George’s County Deputy Chief James Keleti said police received a call around 7:15 a.m. and heard from the woman who said her boyfriend had shot her near the Heather Hill apartment complex on Fisher Road. She said he fled in an SUV.

On their way to the call, officers spotted a vehicle on the 4800 block of St. Barnabas Road that matched the description provided by the woman, Keleti said. Officers told the driver to get out of the vehicle, but they received no response. Keleti said the SUV had “heavily tinted windows.”

Keleti said police declared a barricade situation and activated the department’s conflict management team and special operations division, which responded to the scene.

As officers approached the vehicle, they saw the suspect was deceased, Keleti said, adding that “it appears he suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

The man, who has not been identified, was the sole occupant of the vehicle, Keleti said.

It was not immediately clear from the initial press briefing whether the man shot himself before or after officers arrived at the scene. In a follow-up inquiry from The Banner, a police spokesperson could not say whether the man was alive when officers arrived.

Police said a gun was recovered from the scene.

“This is a very tragic incident. It’s going to be very difficult for the victim, the victim’s family and also the suspect’s family,” Keleti said.
