Baltimore man convicted of kidnapping, murdering man whose body was found in Annapolis

A Baltimore man has been convicted in the kidnapping and murder of 47-year-old David Winchester Jr., whose body was found in Annapolis in 2024 after his mother reported him missing from Baltimore.

An Anne Arundel County jury on Monday found 37-year-old Marquis Mayo of Baltimore guilty of first-degree murder, kidnapping and use of a firearm in commission of a violent crime, the Anne Arundel state’s attorney’s office said in a news release.

“David Winchester’s family was victimized twice — during the home invasion and senseless murder of their son, who was kidnapped in Baltimore, stuffed in a trunk, and killed in a wooded area near a school,” State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess said in a statement. “I am grateful that we were able to bring justice for them today.”

She credited the investigative work of the Annapolis and Baltimore police departments and the FBI.

Circuit Judge Cathleen Vitale set sentencing for Dec. 30.

Mayo was arrested and charged alongside a couple, Jamar Davon Fincher and Monae Monik Fincher. All are from Baltimore.

Authorities said the Finchers were divorced and Jamar Fincher had recently been released from prison after serving time for armed robbery.

Police accused the trio of kidnapping Winchester in Baltimore, fatally shooting him outside of Wiley H. Bates Middle School in Annapolis and dumping his body in a wooded area along Spa Road. Annapolis Police officers discovered Winchester’s body on March 28, 2024. Police believe he was kidnapped and executed the same day.

Officers identified the blue Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross linked to the crime through footage from license plate readers and security footage from the school, authorities said.

Hours after Winchester’s body was found, Annapolis Police learned that Winchester’s mother had been awakened the night before by armed intruders who said her son was being held hostage in the car outside and demanded money, the news release states. The woman’s daughter saw a man pointing a handgun at her mother’s head, and when she fled into her mother’s room, a man with a rifle fired two shots through the door. The daughter and her young child were not injured, the release states.

A jury in February 2025 convicted Mayo of murder and related offenses, but a judge later ordered a new trial at Mayo’s request after he accused the prosecution of an evidence-sharing violation.

The judge declared a mistrial in Mayo’s second trial in March after a jury deadlocked in the case.

Jamar Fincher pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and Monae Fincher pleaded to second-degree murder in the case. Both both are scheduled to be sentenced on Friday.
