A man accused of attacking a student on the campus of Johns Hopkins University is guilty of attempted rape and related crimes, a judge ruled Friday.
Baltimore Circuit Judge Jeffrey Geller said that when the student picked Raymond Lunn out of a photo array, her identification appeared to be “weak at first blush.”
But Geller said he believed she was acting with circumspection and noted that she made a “confident, positive identification of the defendant in court.” He described the student as a “highly credible witness,” adding that other evidence corroborated her testimony.
Geller then convicted Lunn, 32, of Woodbourne Heights, of attempted rape, assault and a sex offense. The judge acquitted him of a separate sex offense after finding that prosecutors failed to prove the student endured strangulation during the attack.
“Testifying in open court and confronting your attacker requires immense strength,” Baltimore State’s Attorney Ivan Bates said in a statement. “Because this survivor chose to stand up, speak out, and trust the justice system, a dangerous offender has been held accountable.”
Bates added, “Her bravery not only secured this conviction but has undoubtedly made her campus and our city safer.”
The student, 20, testified that she was taking an evening stroll on Oct. 18, 2025, when a stranger patted her on the shoulder, asked her for directions on how to get out of the Homewood campus in North Baltimore, and thanked her. He then ran off.
Later, when the student was walking around Decker Quad, listening to music and scrolling through TikTok, someone attacked her from behind, she said.
The perpetrator, she said, grabbed her, threw her to the ground and tried to remove her clothing. She testified that she fought back and recognized him as the person who had asked her for directions.
The man ran away after he heard voices and footsteps.
The Banner does not identify survivors of sexual assault without their permission.
Detectives pulled surveillance video from before and after the attack. Baltimore Police also received a tip pointing them to Lunn from Metro Crime Stoppers of Maryland.
“He attacked her,” Assistant State’s Attorney Keera Gilbert said in her closing argument. “He was attempting to rape her.”
Lunn has a previous conviction from 2019 in Baltimore County for attempted rape.
His attorneys, Assistant Public Defenders Janet Andersen and Robert Cohen, contested the identification of their client and said that an unknown assailant committed the crime.
“He has proclaimed his innocence throughout this process,” Cohen said in his closing argument. “Mr. Lunn is not guilty of all of these charges.”
These types of attacks are rare, and people who commit sexual violence often know their victims.
Lunn is being held in Baltimore Central Booking & Intake Center without bail. He’s scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 10.
