A 15-year-old student from Columbia was charged after he was found at school with an unloaded gun on Thursday, police said.

The teenager was at Hammond High School for summer programs when a school resource officer received a report that the suspect had a gun in his possession, according to Sherry Llewellyn, a spokesperson for Howard County Police Department. The school officer found the boy, recovered the gun and called police, according to an email sent to Hammond High School families.

“School safety is our utmost priority, and the members of the administrative team and security staff will continue to be vigilant in maintaining the safety of Hammond High School,” the email said.

The suspect had made no threats, according to police, and it was not immediately clear how school officials became aware of the gun.

The 15-year-old has been charged with “various weapon violations,” according to the police department.

Howard County Public Schools did not immediately return a request for comment.
