A federal judge sentenced two Baltimore men on Tuesday to lengthy prison terms for their involvement in an attempted carjacking that turned deadly in 2022, officials said.

U.S. District Judge James K. Bredar sentenced Jerritt Barron, 24, and Jeremy Matheny, 27, to 40 years and 24 years, respectively, in prison and five years of supervised release, the Justice Department said in a news release. Federal prosecutors said Barron and Matheny were among a group of four young people β€” all from Baltimore β€” who carried out several armed carjackings in the region, including the one that resulted in the killing.

On June 19, 2022, Barron, Matheny, Nefertiti Moore and Antonio Purisima attempted a carjacking near an Interstate 95 ramp in Baltimore, officials said. The news release states Moore exited a black pickup truck and flagged down the driver of another vehicle, who officials did not identify.

Barron, Matheny and Purisima blocked the victim’s vehicle from entering the I-95 ramp, officials said. Barron and Purisima exited their cars and approached the other driver, who was shot by one group member before they all fled the scene. The victim died from the gunshot wounds.

Four days earlier, DOJ officials said, Barron, Matheny and Purisima followed a woman from Maryland Live! Casino to her home in Glen Burnie, where two of the men approached her car wearing masks, brandished handguns and demanded money or her vehicle. The masked pair drove off with the vehicle, which was recovered an hour later in the Baltimore area.

Authorities said historical cell site data placed Matheny, Moore and Purisima at or near the scene of the fatal shooting. They said fingerprints from the Glen Burnie victim’s carjacked vehicle matched Matheny and Purisima, and that a cell phone in Matheny’s possession showed Barron, Matheny and Purisima posing with firearms at the casino.

Purisima pleaded guilty on April 15 and will be sentenced on July 28 for his involvement in the incident.
