An Annapolis Police Department officer shot and killed an “aggressive” dog Saturday morning, the department said.

Police were called to the unit block of Tiburon Court for a report of two people and two dogs that were bitten around 8:30 a.m. June 27.

The two responding officers saw a group of people, including someone holding a dog. The dog “became aggressive” and broke loose from the person’s control, said Bud Zapata, a spokesperson for the Police Department.

The dog “charged” at the officer, who was between the dog and some bystanders, Zapata said. He said the incident report did not describe what the dog looked like, but the officer called it a “pit bull.”

The officer shot the dog, who died, police said.

Zapata said only one officer shot the dog. The officer was not placed on leave following the incident.

Anne Arundel County Animal Services took possession of the dog’s body, and the animal’s owners were notified, police said.

Zapata said there is no police investigation into the incident, though Animal Services may be looking into it.

Animal Services could not be reached because their offices were closed.

One of the people bitten by the dog went to a hospital for treatment and the other person refused medical care, police said.
