Montgomery County Public Schools will be closed Monday due to worsening conditions from Sunday’s snowfall.
The district had initially called for a two-hour delay, but “greater-than-expected accumulation ... made it unsafe to open schools, even with a delay,” the district wrote.
“After everything our community has navigated with the storm at the end of January, we were all hoping to be finished with snow and ice,” the district posted on its website. “Unfortunately, we are NOT done yet.”
Gov. Moore Sunday evening declared a state of emergency as the storm intensified.
The district is trying to figure out how to make up for a full week of school missed during January’s storm. State law requires campuses to operate at least 180 days each year.
With schools closed on Monday, the district says:
- Child care programs and community use activities are canceled.
- All activities, field trips and programs in schools and on school grounds are canceled, including athletic practices and events.
Emergency personnel are expected to report to school facilities.
County officials said they don’t expect the precipitation to significantly impact travel south and west of Interstate 495, but they predict “dangerous conditions in much of the rest of the county.”
The county’s alert added: “Your street may be clear; however, the critical staff necessary to operate your child’s school may be in an area significantly more impacted than where you live.”
Montgomery County Recreation announced all programs and classes before 10 a.m. will be canceled, along with senior transportation and the congregate meal program.
The aquatic, recreation and senior centers run by the department will open at 9 a.m. or their regularly scheduled times if later than that.
Montgomery County government facilities are open on Monday according to their normal operating schedules.
