The number of heat-related deaths in Maryland has topped 30, putting this summer on track to be one of the deadliest for hyperthermia, state data shows.

The Maryland Department of Health reports there have been 34 heat-related deaths in the state this year, a level it didn’t reach until October in 2025.

The data shows there have been 28 heat-related deaths in July alone, up from the 14 the state reported last week.

The rising number of deaths follows a string of high-temperature days over the Fourth of July weekend. Temperatures climbed to more than 100 degrees July 3 and on Independence Day, July 4.

Scorching heat returned to the region last week, this time accompanied by a thick haze of smoke from wildfires burning in Canada that caused Maryland’s air quality to deteriorate.

There were 36 heat-related deaths in 2025, a high not seen since 46 people died from heat after a derecho hit Maryland in 2012.
