WSSC Water issued a boil water advisory on Thursday for residents in the Accokeek and Clinton areas of Prince George’s County.

As of 8 a.m. Friday, the advisory remained in effect. Residents in the impacted areas can pick up bottled water from a distribution point at Accokeek Academy, 14400 Barry Road, until 2 p.m.

The advisory went into effect after a 16-inch diameter water main break around 5 p.m. Thursday near Livingston and Piscataway roads Road in Clinton, according to WSSC Water. Overnight crews repaired the break and the utility is testing the water quality.

The agency says the approximately 3,600 affected customers should boil water for at least one minute before drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, or giving it to pets.

Any stored water, drinks or ice made recently should be discarded, according to WSSC Water.

Lyn Riggins, the utility’s spokesperson, said they do not yet know what caused the break and it hasn’t determined whether it will conduct a forensic analysis.

Of the approximately 1,800 water main leaks or breaks per year, about 1,100 occur during the winter months, she said. When the Potomac River temperatures hit a seasonal low, it can “shock” the system and cause water main damage.

“But during this time, we wouldn’t see anything like that,” she said. “Heat doesn’t have the same effect as the cold. So, we don’t have a cause right now.”

WSSC Water will provide updates on the boil advisory via social media.
