The Maryland Attorney General’s Office identified the man shot and killed by a Maryland-National Capital Park Police officer last week in Fort Washington Park as Alex Charles.

The officer, Anthony Delozier, is a 15-year veteran of Prince George’s County Division of the park police department, and has 24 years of prior policing experience, according to the AG’s office.

Delozier is currently on paid administrative leave, according to Maryland-Capital Park Police Lt. Shaun McCracken.

The attorney general’s Independent Investigations Division, which is investigating the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting, did not release further details Tuesday.

In a previous release, state investigators said officers were called to the scene around 6 p.m. following reports of gunfire and a man carrying a gun near the river.

The officer, now identified as Delozier, “encountered a man by the river,” investigators said, and “during that encounter, the officer ... discharged his service weapon, striking the man.”

Charles was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers reportedly recovered a handgun near his body, the state investigators said.

Before joining the National Capital Park Police, Delozier worked as a Prince George’s County police officer. As a sergeant for the county, Delozier was indicted in 2000 on charges of unreasonable force and conspiracy for his involvement in a police dog attack on homeless men.

According to media reports and court records, at one point, Delozier asked a sergeant in charge, “Sarge, can the dog get a bite?” Delozier then spoke to his partner, who released the dog while the suspects still had their hands in the air, according to prosecutors’ version of events.

One of the men sustained “at least one serious dog bite,” according to court records. Delozier was later acquitted of both charges.

Maryland’s OAG continues to investigate the fatal shooting. In most cases, the office releases the officer’s body-worn camera footage within 20 days of the incident.
