Orioles deal Tyler Wells to Rays, getting pitcher they traded in the offseason

The selling continues from Baltimore.

The Orioles are parting with right-hander Tyler Wells, sending him in a trade to the Tampa Bay Rays, a source said. ESPN first reported the deal.

Wells is a valuable reliever who is under team control through the 2027 season.

In return, the Orioles are getting right-hander Michael Forret back in the deal. Forret was originally traded from the Orioles to Tampa Bay in the Shane Baz trade this winter. The Tampa Bay Times first reported Forret’s inclusion.

This is one of several big deals already on deadline day. The Orioles traded catcher Adley Rutschman to the Boston Red Sox, outfielder Taylor Ward to the Seattle Mariners, and on Friday, they traded right-hander Dean Kremer to the Minnesota Twins.

Wells will reunite with closer Bryan Baker, another former Orioles reliever. Baltimore parted ways with Baker last year, and this season, he became an All-Star.

Wells holds a 2.67 ERA in 43 games with four saves. He can pitch in multiple situations.
