PITTSBURGH — The Orioles promoted left-hander Cade Povich, who should be in line to start a game this week against the Chicago White Sox as the replacement for injured right-hander Zach Eflin.

Given the 15-day buffer period for pitchers who were optioned to the minors, Povich can be recalled Sunday because right-hander Yaramil Hiraldo was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation.

Eflin’s injury replacement arrived last week in the form of right-hander Albert Suárez, who will mainly serve as a bulk reliever. Povich is the like-for-like replacement, at least in the near term, for the rotation.

The Hiraldo injury allowed Povich to return to the majors, and if he starts Monday, it gives left-hander Trevor Rogers an extra day of rest ahead of a Tuesday start. The exact order of the rotation hasn’t been announced.

Baltimore needed a fifth starter for Monday or Tuesday. The other option was to pitch a bullpen game one of those days.

Povich pitched 112 1/3 innings last season and produced a 5.21 ERA and 4.18 FIP (fielding independent pitching, which only measures outcomes the pitcher can control: walks, hit batters, strikeouts and home runs). He opened this season in Triple-A, where he allowed five runs in five innings.

Povich is fully rested, which plays a role in why he’s getting the nod here instead of right-hander Dean Kremer. Kremer started Friday for the Norfolk Tides, so he wouldn’t be on full rest Monday or Tuesday.

This is an immediate test of Baltimore’s rotation depth. Eflin, who’s on the 15-day injured list with right elbow discomfort, will receive a second opinion early this week from Dr. Keith Meister in Texas. A lengthy stint on the sideline seems likely.

The Orioles initially turned to Suárez to help the bullpen last week, but Hiraldo’s injury opens the door for Povich to supplement the rotation. Hiraldo has gotten off to a poor start, with four runs against him in 1 2/3 innings. His IL designation is retroactive to April 2.
