NEW YORK — The line drive off Bo Bichette’s bat was scorched at 105.1 mph, and Shane Baz took the full brunt of it.

The liner hit the Orioles starting pitcher on what appeared to be his right elbow, although it happened so quickly the exact location was difficult to discern. What was clear is Baz was in immediate pain.

Baz tried to throw one warmup pitch and sailed it to the backstop, which prompted his removal from the game with no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Left-hander Grant Wolfram entered to replace him.

The injury ended Baz’s night after four innings with three runs against him. He threw 68 pitches.

At the time of Baz’s departure, the New York Mets were leading, 3-2.

The Mets scored off Baz in each of the first three innings, and the laborious first and second frames drove up Baz’s pitch count. He only needed eight pitches in the third, but the first one Baz threw wound up as a Carson Benge homer to give up the lead.

The Orioles got on the board with solo homers from Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Jeremiah Jackson in the second inning against left-hander Sean Manaea.

Baltimore already lost right-hander Kyle Bradish for the rest of the regular season when he went on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a lower abdominal strain. It remains to be seen how serious Baz’s injury is, but it would put a strain on the Orioles rotation if he must miss time over the final two weeks.

The Orioles acquired Baz from the Tampa Bay Rays this offseason, and they signed him to a contract extension just before his first appearance in Baltimore. He has pitched to a 4.11 ERA in 30 games.
