SARASOTA, Fla. — The injury status of Orioles infielder Jordan Westburg is murkier than initially believed.

A source with direct knowledge of the situation said Westburg underwent imaging on his elbow. A prognosis is to be determined.

When asked Thursday for an update on Westburg’s condition, manager Craig Albernaz said the 27-year-old is unable to participate currently and that he’s receiving evaluation from internal and external professionals. Albernaz said the goal is “to make sure that we’re doing our due diligence and make sure Jordan is in the best chance to play this year.”

Westburg entered camp with an oblique injury that delayed his participation. When asked whether Westburg was dealing with an injury in addition to his oblique, Albernaz declined to specify.

“He’s unable to participate right now,” Albernaz said. “He’s getting evaluated by our medical team and also outside people to make sure we have a plan in place to see what’s going on with Jordan.”

Westburg was already rehabbing an oblique injury that he suffered last month. He had returned to running drills and it’s unclear whether he began to hit and throw. The timeline for that oblique injury was hazy, but Westburg was set to miss the first game of Grapefruit League play.

At the beginning of camp, president of baseball operations Mike Elias said Westburg had turned the corner in terms of his recovery timeline.

Westburg has dealt with his share of injuries in the past. In 2024, an errant pitch broke his hand. Last year, Westburg missed time for a hamstring strain and ankle sprain. He played 85 games last season, hitting .265 with a .770 on-base-plus-slugging percentage. He was due to be an everyday player on the infield again this season, particularly at third base.

The Orioles are also without second baseman Jackson Holliday for the beginning of the season after he underwent surgery to remove the broken hamate bone from his right hand.

In the interim, should Westburg miss more time, Coby Mayo may see increased opportunities at third base, even though Baltimore moved him to first base last year. Blaze Alexander, Luis Vázquez and Jeremiah Jackson are likely infielders to receive reps at second and third, too.
