CINCINNATI — The Orioles are set to be without their closer once again. Right-hander Ryan Helsley was placed on the 15-day injured list with right elbow discomfort, marking his second injured list stint this season.

The Orioles recalled right-hander Anthony Nunez from Triple-A Norfolk to fill out their bullpen. Before Nunez was optioned in June, he was one of three Orioles relievers with more than one save this season, joining Helsley and right-hander Rico Garcia.

Baltimore also recalled infielder Jeremiah Jackson and designated catcher Chadwick Tromp for assignment. That alteration gives the Orioles more positional flexibility rather than carrying three catchers on the roster.

Helsley and left-hander Keegan Akin — who went on the injured list in late June with elbow discomfort — are still going over their options after receiving elbow MRIs, Orioles manager Craig Albernaz said. Albernaz expected more information to be available in the coming days.

“Just like any player should, it’s trying to see what the best decision is for him and the best course of action to get him healthy,” Albernaz said.

Nunez, a rookie, broke out earlier this season. He held a 2.35 ERA at the end of April. But over the next few weeks, Nunez saw his ERA elevate to 4.98 as batters understood his approach more clearly.

In Triple-A, Nunez allowed five earned runs in five outings.

Part of those uneven results was due to Nunez altering his pitch mix to better combat batters in different matchups. Nunez said that included working on command on the inside and outside part of the plate to batters of both handedness.

“When there’s something to work on, you want him to work on it,” Albernaz said. “Sometimes it’s tough for a player to do that because you’re also, you’re seeing your numbers up there and you think your numbers and performances are going to get you back to the big leagues. Nuney did a great job of taking what the feedback is for him, and his development path, and really work on those things.”

Helsley joined the Orioles this offseason, signing a two-year, $28 million with a player option for 2027. He leads the Orioles with eight saves.

Helsley missed almost two months with elbow inflammation earlier this season, but his MRIs from that bout showed no structural damage. On Wednesday, however, discomfort cropped up again. He had been warming to enter in the ninth inning of a win, but with a barking elbow, he couldn’t pitch.

“My level of concern with something like that is always high. It’s almost like you prepare for the worst and hope for the best,” Albernaz said after Wednesday’s win.

Baltimore opted to recall Jackson a week after optioning him, as well. That could spell the end of Tromp’s time in the organization if the catcher is claimed off waivers.

But including Jackson on the roster helps with flexibility. He primarily plays second base but can fit into the corner outfield and third base as needed.
