Late Tuesday, video surfaced on Twitter of Nationals director of community relations Sean Hudson alleging the organization discriminated against reliever Trevor Williams, segregated LGBTQ+ corporate meetings and monitored fans’ Google history.
James O’Keefe of the Citizen Journalism Foundation released an edited video of Hudson’s comments. The footage was secretly recorded. O’Keefe founded Project Veritas, a far-right activist group that has blurred the lines between investigative journalism and spying.
“The Washington Nationals are aware of comments made by an employee which were recorded without the employee’s knowledge and disseminated without his permission,” the Nationals said in a statement Tuesday.
“The statements are not only factually incorrect, but do not reflect the views, opinions or actions of the Washington Nationals. The Nationals are dedicated to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for our players, fans and staff, and we vehemently deny any allegations to the contrary.”
On Friday, Hudson was let go from the organization. The Athletic first reported news of Hudson’s dismissal.
The video references Williams’ displeasure when the Dodgers invited the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to the team’s LGBTQ+ Pride event in 2023. Williams is Catholic. Hudson alleged that, because of Williams’ views, he’s been omitted from the team’s social media promotional videos. Williams is on the 60-day injured list recovering from an internal brace procedure and has yet to appear in a game this season.
Nationals president of business Jason Sinnarajah spoke about the situation before Friday’s game against the Padres on the team’s broadcast.
“It’s important for us to address with our fans head-on and be open and transparent about what happened,” Sinnarajah said. “Unequivocally, we’re not anti-Catholic. We do not track people’s Google search history. We do not hide players from social media.
“We were horrified by the comments that were made on the video. The comments don’t reflect us as an organization, our values and who we are. We took action right away, and that individual is no longer employed by the team.”
