ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Commanders avoided the worst-case scenario.

Franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels will not have surgery on his dislocated elbow and will avoid a stint on injured reserve, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

Daniels will be listed as week-to-week, although the timeline for his return is still unknown.

Daniels spent the last week seeing specialists and returned to the team facility on Friday morning. Washington held a meeting with Daniels to review the medical assessments and decided he could return this season.

The third-year star was injured in Dallas on Sunday when he tripped over his lineman’s foot. When he braced his fall with his left arm, his elbow hyperextended.

It was the third time in four games that Daniels injured his left elbow. He originally dislocated it against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 9 last year. After sitting out a few games, he returned in Week 14 against the Minnesota Vikings but aggravated the injury and sat out the rest of the year.

Quinn said Daniels never discussed surgery last offseason. He returned to play without wearing a brace.

By avoiding the injured reserve, Daniels can return at any time. Washington plays the Indianapolis Colts in London next Sunday. After that, the Commanders play the New York Giants at home and the San Francisco 49ers on the road.
