A reflection by former Archbishop Spalding athletic director and past MIAA Executive Director Lee Dove on the achievement of a goal set by the late Mike Whittles when he was hired to build the Cavaliers’ football program
The late Mike Whittles, who took over a downtrodden Archbishop Spalding football program in 1999 and set a goal of seeing the team evolve into one capable of competing for the MIAA A Conference championship. After winning four titles in the B Conference, Whittles' final team moved up to the A Conference in 2011 and made the league playoffs. He lost a battle with Pancreatic cancer three months later, but not before achieving his goal and becoming an enduring source of inspiration for all who knew him.
