A suspect accused of armed robbery at Montgomery Mall on Saturday resisted arrest and repeatedly bashed his head into a police cruiser, hurting himself and smashing its window, police said.

Just after 6 p.m., an off-duty Montgomery County Police officer was flagged down by mall security about the robbery.

Police said in a statement Monday that Kilbert Rosales, 34, was inside a parked car in the mall’s parking garage, near Nordstrom, when he opened the driver’s side door and threatened the victims of the robbery.

One of the victims of the robbery later pointed police toward Rosales, who was walking to the mall’s transit center.

Officers handcuffed Rosales and found a red box cutter on his person, which the victims identified as the weapon used in the robbery.

Before he was placed in the police cruiser, Rosales resisted arrest, assaulted officers and repeatedly struck his head against the rear window of the cruiser, shattering the glass and cutting his head, police said.

Officers requested medical assistance, and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue responded to the scene, police said.

Rosales refused treatment and was transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where he assaulted correctional officers, police said.

He has been charged with armed robbery, theft ($100 to under $1,500), disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, malicious destruction of property and related charges. He is being held without bond, and it is unclear whether he has obtained an attorney.
