The longest span of the bridge, in its center, measures 1200 feet. The vertical clearance for ships navigating under the bridge was 185 feet in its central span. The channel depth at that point was 50 feet. The pickup truck with two bridge workers was recovered at a depth of 25 feet in the water. Eight people were on the bridge. Two survived, two were found dead, and four are missing.
