The top candidate for superintendent of Baltimore County Public Schools has been selected and sent to state officials for approval, the Baltimore County Board of Education announced Saturday morning.

The decision came after a public town hall and a final round of interviews with the four candidates. If approved by the Maryland state superintendent, the name of the next superintendent will be released Monday, according to the news release from the county’s Board of Education. The person will begin the job as the head of Baltimore County Public Schools on July 1 after their appointment next week.

Four candidates with varying levels of classroom and education leadership experience were in the running for the job. This includes William “Bill” Heiser, the chief operating officer for Anne Arundel County’s school system; Penelope Martin-Knox, the superintendent of Raytown C-2 School District in Missouri; Edward Ryans, associate superintendent for high schools and nontraditional programs for Prince George’s County Public Schools; and David Sovine, superintendent of Washington County Public Schools.

The superintendent will lead one of the largest school districts in the country, with about 108,000 students enrolled in the last school year, according to district data. School system employees have said they hope the next superintendent can help improve low morale among the 20,000 staffers by offering better pay, reducing job cuts and making classrooms smaller.
