Apple will permanently close its store at Towson Town Center in June, according to a union representative for its roughly 90 employees.

The Towson location is one of three reportedly closing this year and was Apple’s first unionized retail location in the United States. The move follows the shuttering of two U.S.-based stores last year.

Workers at the Towson location unionized in 2022 and ratified a contract with the tech giant in August 2024. The agreement included higher pay, scheduling protections and a disciplinary process with “protections and accountability,” The Banner reported.

Kevin Gallagher, a representative of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, which represents the Coalition of Organized Retail Employees, said store workers learned of the closure during a company call at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Gallagher said he was unable to share the contents of the call.

“We are really disappointed in Apple’s decision, and we will be looking at every single option available to us to advocate for our members, the workers of the store and, frankly, the Baltimore community,” he said, adding that the city’s residents will have to trek to Columbia or Annapolis to get to another store.

In a statement, Apple blamed “the departure of several retailers and declining conditions” of the Towson Town Center for the closing. The shopping mall has lost a growing list of major retailers in recent months, including Tommy Bahama, Madewell and Banana Republic.

“Following the departure of several retailers and declining conditions at Trumbull Mall, the Shops at North County, and Towson Town Center, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our stores at these locations,” representatives for Apple said in a Thursday statement.

With the store closing, the roughly 90 Towson employees will be able to apply for open roles at other stores and within the company “in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement,” the statement reads.
