Montgomery County Council President Natali Fani-González has thrown her support behind council colleague Evan Glass in the race for county executive.
Fani-González said in a statement that she had been reluctant to endorse in a race that features three council members — Glass is running against at-large member Will Jawando and Andrew Friedson, who represents District 1.
But she said that Glass distinguished himself during the council’s fraught, weekslong recent budget process. She framed her endorsement as equal parts support for Glass and — without mentioning their names — a rebuke of how Jawando and Friedson handled the process.
“The vast majority of colleagues understood the assignment under critical times,” Fani-González said in a statement Tuesday. “Yet, two colleagues decided to play politics with the budget instead of working constructively to find compromise for the benefit of our residents.”
The council president said that she and Glass don’t agree on everything, but that “leadership is not about surrounding yourself with people who always agree with you.
“It’s about honesty, integrity and being willing to work together even when there are disagreements,” she said.
Glass couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
Five of the eight council members not running for county executive have now weighed in on the race.
Council members Laurie-Anne Sayles and Kristin Mink are supporting Jawando, while Marilyn Balcombe and Dawn Luedtke have endorsed Friedson.
Council members Kate Stewart, Sidney Katz and Shebra Evans have not weighed in.
Primary election day is June 23, and early voting will be held between June 11 and 18.
