Savista will lay off 39 workers in Bethesda

Savista, a global company that helps medical practices and hospitals manage billing, insurance and other aspects of their operations, plans to lay off 39 employees in Bethesda.

The layoffs will take effect between Oct. 15 and Dec. 31, according to a notice filed with the Maryland Department of Labor this month. The impacted employees work with Capital Medical Group, a regional medical practice with offices at 4920 Elm Street in Bethesda.

The cuts at Savista, which is based in Alpharetta, Georgia, and employs more than 3,000 around the world, follow recent changes involving George Washington University and an affiliated nonprofit physician practice called Medical Faculty Associates.

Earlier this year, the university and MFA reached an agreement with Universal Health Services, which operates the university’s hospital, to transition MFA’s operations to Capital Medical Group, a new physician group.

In a statement shared with The Banner, Savista wrote that the layoffs are related to this transition. Some of Savista’s positions are transitioning to Capital Medical Group and others are being eliminated. Most MFA physicians and staff were expected to continue to be employed by Capital Medical Group, according to the official announcement.

“We are communicating directly with affected colleagues and are committed to supporting them throughout the transition,” Savista said.

Several other companies have announced mass layoffs in Montgomery County this summer. EchoStar, a telecommunications company, will soon lay off 330 people across facilities in Gaithersburg and Germantown. Microsoft’s ZeniMax Media is also cutting more than 350 jobs across Maryland, including 166 roles in Rockville.
