Ashley Le and Mike Luu couldn’t find a third space in their neighborhood to take their newborn daughter and stay for a while. So they made one.

The Paper Heart Bookstore, in the Kentlands, is celebrating its grand opening this weekend after opening its doors last month.

“We wanted to create a space that was for the community and for people like me: for moms, for parents with kids to come and hang out and feel comfortable and just stay a while,” Le said.

To hammer that point home, the bookstore is hosting festivities all weekend, from kids crafting and story time to a game night and a “found bookish family” social event.

Almost all events are free, though some require advance registration. One event, a book charm and bedazzling workshop, costs $40 for crafting supplies.

Beyond opening weekend, Le and Luu aim to build a community through regular events, such as book clubs and a ’90s crafts night every Friday, complete with music, movies and themed snacks.

“I’m just looking forward to meeting the people who are excited about doing things in this space with other book lovers and finding their people,” Luu said. “Hopefully, they leave with new friends.”
