Junction Bistro is the latest in a string of Chevy Chase restaurant closures

Matthew Gorman woke up this morning craving his usual cappuccino from Junction Bistro, Bar & Bakery.

The Friendship Heights resident is a regular at the Chevy Chase café down the street. He often picks up a curry chicken salad or takes a business meeting at the local chain.

But that routine came to an abrupt halt this weekend, when Junction’s Chevy Chase location permanently closed.

“It was sadness, it was anger,” Gorman said of his reaction. “I love this area, and what I don’t understand is how we keep losing restaurants.”

Chevy Chase and Friendship Heights, which border each other along the Maryland-D.C. border, have seen a streak of restaurant and store closures recently. Earlier this year, Friendship Heights’ Cheesecake Factory shut its doors after 34 years. Food hall The Heights closed last summer, and Joy By Seven Reasons shut down in December. Peet’s Coffee, Lord & Taylor, Sur La Table and Sephora have also closed in the area in recent years.

Junction has had a difficult summer. The chain shuttered on Capitol Hill in July. With the demise of the Chevy Chase location, it’s now doing business only in its original Alexandria, Virginia, location. Representatives for Junction did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but the team issued a statement via social media last week announcing the Chevy Chase closure.

“Thank you for making Junction part of your routines over the years — from morning coffees and weekend brunches to quick lunches, celebrations, and everything in between. ... We truly appreciate every visit, every order, and every person who walked through our doors,” the post reads.

With Junction gone, Gorman plans to retreat to the Friendship Heights Whole Foods, which has a coffee bar.

Its cappuccino is pretty solid, he said, “but it’s not the same. ... We need a vibrant neighborhood where we don’t have just one option.”
