We’ve reached that time of year when the days are longer but the cherry blossoms haven’t opened.

Thankfully, there are plenty of other ways to mark the start of spring, from gardening prep to egg hunts.

While you await the Yoshino trees, here are seven things to do in Howard County for March 19-25.

Spring egg hunt

10-11:30 a.m. Saturday

The thrill is in the hunt! You could buy your kiddos chocolate and jelly beans, or you could make them really work for them at the Gary J. Arthur Community Center’s annual Spring Egg Hunt. This event is geared toward children ages 2-10 and takes place in the gymnasium. Preregistration is required, and don’t forget to bring your own basket.

Permaculture workshop

10-11:30 a.m. Saturday

The key to a spectacular garden begins in winter. Take a free class in permaculture through the Howard County Conservancy with Roxana Segovia-Beltran of Gardyn-Doulah. This beginner-friendly workshop covers principles that lead to “resilient gardens, deeper ecological awareness and stronger community connections.” No gardening experience required, but a notebook is recommended.

Women’s strength training

6-7 p.m. Wednesday

Seasons change, and that’s true for women’s bodies too. The Columbia Association’s medical director, Dr. Jyothi Rao, will explain women’s hormonal changes and the importance of strength training. Participants are then invited to explore strength training through dance with a CA trainer. The event will take place at Supreme Sports Club Arena.
