Baltimore-area music fans can breathe a sigh of relief: The 8x10 in Federal Hill will live on.

Originally set to close for good at the end of June, the intimate concert venue has found new owners: Rising Sun Presents — a live music production company based in Ardmore, Pennsylvania — veteran Baltimore musician Cris Jacobs and Jeremy Rusen.

The 8x10 will temporarily shut down after June 27 for the summer, with plans to reopen in October, according to Chris Perella, managing partner of Rising Sun Presents.

Exiting owners Abigail Janssens and Brian Shupe said in January that The 8x10 — which has hosted acts like Phish, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Widespread Panic — would close June 30 so they could retire and take care of their parents. The married couple has operated the 300-person-capacity venue, which first opened in 1983 as Joe’s Organic Juice Bar, for the past 21 years.

Rising Sun Presents will also co-own the building located at 10 E. Cross St. with current owner Dave Rather, Perella said in an email.

Rising Sun Presents, founded in 2022, also runs Ardmore Music Hall in the Philadelphia suburbs.

The new owners plan to upgrade the venue, including its signage, food and beverages, and introduce a membership program, according to a press release. They will also aim to book more national touring acts.

“We believed the universe would deliver The 8x10 the right owners if we waited long enough, and it obviously did,” Shupe said in a statement. “We trust that RSP will be loyal stewards and protect The 8x10 long into the future.”

Jacobs, the blues artist who fronted the popular Baltimore band The Bridge, said in a statement that it’s an honor to preserve the venue’s legacy.

“The 8x10 has helped shape who I am as a person and an artist,” Jacobs said. “It’s been that sacred space for creating music and building lifelong communities in Baltimore for decades.”

The 8x10 will host a handful of shows before the summer closure, including the Talking Heads tribute band Psycho Killers on June 20 and a three-night finale event, Trust in the Music, from June 25-27.
