Maryland movie buffs might have to fly to a different state to watch “Dune: Part Three” on 70mm IMAX .

The conclusion to the epic space saga doesn’t premiere until December, but many 70mm film screenings are sold out just a day after tickets went on sale — including at the Regal UA King of Prussia in Pennsylvania, the closest IMAX theater to Baltimore showing the film.

The Maryland Science Center isn’t showing the movie on its five-story IMAX screen, the biggest in the state. At least not on the movie’s opening date. Additional screenings and tickets could be available closer to the release date, according to Forbes.

A big part of the movie was shot in IMAX film, Denis Villeneuve, the saga’s director, told The Credits, the Motion Picture Association’s online magazine. IMAX uses 70mm film, producing an area more than eight times the size of standard 35 mm. The movie frames also contain 18,000 pixels, exceeding most high-definition television screens.

Director Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” in 2008 helped IMAX 70mm film break into the Hollywood mainstream. Since then, several major movies have been, “Filmed for Imax,” including “Oppenheimer” and “Sinners.”

Villeneuve described IMAX cameras as “epic” and the full IMAX experience as “the most immersive format.”

“When you see the result on screen, it’s quite unmatchable,” he told The Credits.

IMAX showings in Arizona, Florida, Georgia and Indiana are also sold out. There are still some early tickets available in Rochester, New York, and in California, Tennessee and Texas.
