Surveillance videos shed new light on the chaotic seconds before a Maryland Transit Administration bus slammed into a building in Pikesville on Wednesday, leaving more than 30 people injured.

A widely shared video from the Platinum Law Group, a personal injury firm located at the intersection of Reisterstown Road and Old Court Road, caught the bus zooming through the intersection alongside a white SUV, which it appeared to swipe and drag before veering into incoming traffic.

A second video, shared by Neha Salon owner Neha Gupta, shows the bus hitting a pole and dragging down its wires before slamming into a FedEx Office store, trapping the driver. The salon is located on Reisterstown Road.

The disaster involved downed electrical wires, scattered vehicle parts and several overturned cars with their airbags deployed, circumstances Baltimore County’s fire chief likened to a “war scene.” Witnesses said the bus driver was extracted by emergency responders and transported by air to a hospital.

Gupta’s video documented the screams, shouts and blasting car horns heard in the background at the time of the incident.

Maryland transit officials declined to offer any details Thursday about the multivehicle crash, calling it an active and ongoing investigation. The Maryland Transit Administration directed questions about the bus and its driver to Baltimore County Police Department officials, who said the bus “lost control” and that the matter remains under investigation.

In a Thursday afternoon news release, Baltimore County Police spokesman Trae Corbin said 12 vehicles were involved and 36 patients were transported to hospitals for treatment.

More than 100 first responders converged on the scene just before 6 p.m. Wednesday. The site was mostly clear of debris and visible signs of distress by Thursday morning. The FedEx shop was boarded up with plywood and marked off with yellow caution tape.

Wednesday night’s wreckage extended along Reisterstown Road from Old Court Road to McHenry Avenue.
