Baltimore County fire crews are responding to the scene of a major accident in Pikesville after a Maryland Transit Administration bus crashed into a building Wednesday evening, leaving more than 30 people injured, one critically.
A large number of medical units have been deployed to the scene in the 1500 block of Reisterstown Road, Baltimore County Fire Department spokesperson Andrew Laird said in an email. The building, which includes a FedEx Corp. branch, suffered structural damage, Laird said.
Officials have requested a medical evacuation helicopter, Shock Trauma Go Team and two medical ambulance buses from other jurisdictions, Laird said.
βMy administration is closely monitoring the situation following the multi-vehicle crash involving a MTA bus in Baltimore County,β Gov. Wes Moore said in a statement on X. βDawn and I are keeping everyone impacted in our hearts and prayers. We are deeply grateful for our first responders who acted with speed and skill to ensure the safety of our neighbors. Weβve been in close coordination with local officials to provide any support needed on the ground.β
Spokespersons for MTA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Baltimore County Fire Department officials have said at least seven other vehicles were involved in the crash. Laird said at least 33 people were transported to area hospitals by early Wednesday evening.
Downed power lines from the crash were complicating efforts, Laird said. Officials from Baltimore Gas and Electric did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Emergency crews rescued a person trapped around 6:50 p.m.
The accident happened near a strip mall that houses businesses like Mattress Firm, Goldbergβs New York Bagels and Coffee and more.
Kim Rozel, who lives in an apartment nearby, said she stepped outside as soon as she heard a helicopter flying overhead. Witnesses told her that the bus tried to brake to avoid a two-car collision but failed to stop in time.
In a video posted to social media, the scene involved several busted-up vehicles on both sides of the road, some with their airbags deployed.
βOh my god,β bystanders were recorded saying. βThe bus was driving at a very high speed.β
