Baltimore County fire and emergency personnel rescued two concrete plant workers stuck about 75 feet above ground in a silo elevator Wednesday, officials said. Neither worker was injured.
Fire officials said online emergency personnel responded to the 1100 block of Wharf Road in Sparrows Point for a “high-angle rescue” at Amrize, a building solutions company with a concrete plant, around 1:36 p.m. Wednesday. Fire crews completed the rescue around 3:20 p.m.
The elevator had a mechanical failure that left the two workers suspended about 75 feet in the air, Baltimore County Fire Department spokesperson Andrew S. Laird said in an email.
A rescuer was lowered near the closest opening above the workers, placed harnesses on the employees and lifted them via a rope system, Laird said.
Dinah Winnick, a spokesperson for the Maryland Occupational Safety and Health Department, said in an email they are aware of the incident and will monitor for further developments.
Officials from Amrize did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The county tapped Baltimore City for mutual aid in the “high-angle rescue,” fire officials said on social media.
Earlier this year, Baltimore County fire crews had to rescue an Atlantic Concrete worker in Cockeysville who became trapped waist-deep in a sand hopper elevated 75 feet.
