Teen wounded in Blake High School shooting sentenced to 98 days in jail

A Montgomery County teen pleaded guilty to illegal gun possession and was sentenced to 98 days in jail in connection with a shooting in the parking lot of James Hubert Blake High School in April, prosecutors said Friday.

The then-17-year-old was a student at the time of the April 29 incident on the campus of the Silver Spring school and was wounded during a struggle for the weapon. The teen sustained foot and leg injuries and was driven to the hospital by others who were also involved in a large fight, according to investigators.

Judge Ann Harrington accepted the teen’s guilty plea Wednesday in Montgomery County Circuit Court and imposed a five-year sentence, with all but 98 days suspended, followed by three years of supervised probation.

The teen, who is now 18, was charged in adult court with possession of a firearm while under the age of 21, prosecutors said. The Banner does not name defendants who were under 18 at the time of their alleged crimes.

The Banner could not determine the name of the lawyer for the teen Friday.

Djibia Gombo, 19, is awaiting trial on charges of first-degree assault and possession of a dangerous weapon on school property in connection with the incident, prosecutors said.

Gombo, of Silver Spring, allegedly aimed a handgun at a school security officer who had commanded him to drop the weapon, according to court records.

Moments later, police took Gombo into custody. Court records indicate a student gave investigators a video of the shooting, which occurred during lunchtime.
